Peñafiel, Valladolid, Spain

Established in 1927, 11 childhood friends met for a celebration in Penafiel with the dream of creating great wine and more importantly reenergizing a long-forgotten wine area. Together they redefined wine history with the birth of Protos which in time, brought status to the area now known worldwide as Ribera del Duero. Protos was the first in a movement dedicated to the production of the highest quality.

Protos in Ribera del Duero produces 100% Tempranillo or the preferred name in the region, “Tinto de País.” They also have property in Rueda dedicated to 100% Verdejo.

Planted as bush vines or in trellises, the grapes are harvested by hand, and inspected in the winery by bunch and by grape. The winery in Peñafiel recently invested in a new building for production and for visitors that is energy and technically efficient while thoughtfully adhering to the aesthetics of the surrounding area that features the prominent castle of Peñafiel. Today the wineries retains 8 oenologists all dedicated to the understanding and sustainability their terroir. The team is led by Marlena Bonilla, one of the first women in the area to hold this leadership role.

In 2017, Protos celebrated its 90th birthday but is new to California. We hope we’ve given you an appreciation for Protos and its influence in the history of Ribera del Duero.
