Bodegas Beronia

Beronia Vineyard

Ollauri, Rioja Alta, La Rioja

Bodegas Beronia, founded by a group of friends from the Basque country in 1973, is situated in the highest elevation of Rioja Alta. They chose the name to reflect the history of a Celtic tribe that inhabited the area traced back the 3rd century BC. Their goal was to create great wines to accompany great gastronomy.

So impressed, the Gonzalez Byass family, famous sherry producers from Southern Spain, bought the winery in 1982. Since then, they have honored the most sustainable methods both in the vineyard and the winery under the direction of Matías Calleja, the winemaker over 40 years of experience. At winery’s request, their coopers created innovative single barrels using both French and American oak; American staves enclosed by French oak ends.

In 2022, Beronia inaugurated their new winery built seamlessly into the hillside using nature and gravity flow to make for the gentlest handling of the grapes. The wines are aged underground where the temperature and humidity stay naturally cool and constant. The result is smooth, complex, elegant wines with many certified organic. 95% are red wines and verdejo produced at their winery in Rueda. Both have produced award winning wines.

The new Beronia winery has received international architectural acclaim. The structure includes the use of rainwater and natural light, the reduction of noise pollution and comprehensive waste management, making it one of the most efficient and sustainable wineries in Europe. They received the “LEED” Leader of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Design along with the CfCP, Wineries for Climate Protection Awards.
