Don Jacobo Building Exterior

Navarrete, Rioja Alta, La Rioja

The roots of Bodegas Corral, home to Don Jacobo go back more than 100 years in a small village near Navarrete, where the winery sits today. Martin Corral married into the Riojan family and the estate honors his name. The winery grew over the next several generations and is currently managed by shareholders from Rioja with Carlos Rubio serving as CEO and the Bodega’s winemaker. The highest standards in the vineyard and in the winery can be appreciated in each of the Bodegas Corral final products.

The most important black grape is the Tempranillo followed by Garnacha, Graziano and Mazuelo, all believed to be indigenous to Spain. Viura, Tempranillo Blanco and Garnacha Blanca, white varietals also with origins in the Rioja area. One of Carlos’ personal projects involves the Malvasia grapes, brought back from almost certain extinction and is now award winning.

The winery sits on the edge of the Ruta Jacobea or the “Way of St. James” and has become a rest stop for pilgrims. They are invited inside to have a glass of wine and a tapa before continuing their journey. In recent years, the old concrete tanks have been converted into tasting rooms where one can enjoy the comfort of being protected from the elements and still feeling connected to the outdoors.

If you will be in the Rioja area, we encourage you to pay this wonderful winery a visit.
