Puigdáber, Penedès, Catalonia, Spain
The Giro del Gorner estate has been in the family for centuries, since 1595. The earliest roots go back to cereal farming, olive trees, fruit trees and also vineyards. The family estate survived phylloxera (the devastating bug that destroyed the vines in Europe), the Spanish Civil War and the restrictive economy during Franco’s rein.
Throughout the hardships, the Giro family retained the estate, upgrading the winery equipment with modern technology. Gabriel Giró i Via, Jr. is the winemaker today preserving the family legacy. Gabriel and his sister, Marta, manage the business producing some of the area’s best Cavas. The estate grows Xerel-lo, Macabello and Parellada, the typical grapes for Pénedes Cavas. They also plant international grapes such a Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay for both still and sparkling wines. The wines beginning from vintage 2020 are certified organic.
