Valtuille de Abajo, Bierzo, Leon, Spain

In 1999, three generations of the Peique family decided to start a winery. Familiar with the terroir in the village where they all grew up, they took the entrepreneurial risk. The goal was to create a sustainable balance between wine and family while still make a living. Jorge, the son of the elder Luis Peique, studied enology in Requena, in the Province of Valencia, and briefly worked for Protos, he then became the Peique winemaker.

The working plots of Peique are dotted through the village, some their own and other properties that the owners entrust to the family. In 2001, the Peique’s bought a building to house the winery and centralize their business tending to the most important grape in Bierzo, the Mencía, and second, Godello, both indigenous to the area.

Through many years of physical hard work, toiling in the fields and sleepless nights, the Peique family developed an award-winning winery receiving the Golden Baco award in 2004 and a Decanter International Trophy in 2006. It was then that the father, Luis Peique realized the success of all their efforts. Today, daughter, Mar and her husband, also name Luis, manage the winery. Two wines pay homage to the family, Ramon Valle, the grandfather and Luis Peique who were invaluable taking care of the vineyards for years.

With the thought of raising the profile of the Bierzo DO, Luis, Mar’s husband has carefully mapped the village plots to create a similar designation analogous to the French Crus. He believes that recognition will help the industry sustain their value.
