Porerra, Priorat, Catalonia, Spain
The beginnings of this winery date back to the Monlleó’s family farm in Porrera, Priorat in the 1700s. In 1979, Pere Sangenís, a descendent of the Monlleó family and Conxita Vaqué began to produce wine in the Plaça Catalonia winery, in the town center, that was owned by Conxita’a grandfather. Together the two family merged their heritage with Sangenís I Vaqué. Today Pere and his two daughters, Maria and Núria share in the responsibility of running the small production family business consisting of three plots of land and the winery.
Due to the slate licorella soil, low rainfall, hot summers cooled by ocean breezes, the yields are naturally low which produces maximum quality grapes. The steep terrain dictates that the grapes must be picked by hand. Their selection is done in the vineyard and again reinspected at the winery before the destemming process making sure to not bruise the berries. The wines are then aged in French and American Oak.
The successful grapes of Priorat are typically blends of grenacha, cariñena, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and/or syrah. The Sangenís I Vaqué wines are carefully crafted estate wines.
